While counties navigate through various phases of Gov. Jay Inslee’s Safe Start plan, the Washington State Department of Health urges residents to still be extra careful in making summer travel plans in an effort to flatten the COVID-19 curve, Island Weekly reported.
Even though Phases 2 and 3 permit more traveling, the department said it doesn’t give the okay for locals to travel as frequently as they typically would during the summer months.
“We still want people to limit their travel,” State Health Officer Dr. Kathy Lofy told Island Weekly. “We have places in Washington with a lot of COVID-19 activity. If there’s a lot of cross-state travel this summer, that could spread disease around the state.”
She added that while many want to enjoy the warm weather as much as possible, public health should be considered a priority as well.
“If people want to travel and it’s allowed based on their phase, we don’t want people traveling across the state,” she told Island Weekly. “Stay local.”
