San Juan County businesses in Washington will have an opportunity to get a leg up on the COVID-19 pandemic in the form of CARES Act funding as the economy focuses on recovery.

The Small Business Relief Grant program from San Juan County began Sept. 1 and offers up to $5,000 from a pool of $150,000 to help businesses keep their doors open, retain jobs and meet the health and safety standards instituted to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the Islands’ Weekly reported. The application process is administered by the San Juan Economic Development Council and independent council with a deadline set for Sept. 20. Businesses will need to have been open for at least a year with no more than 10 full-time employees.

“San Juan County feels fortunate that funding from the CARES Act is available to help support island small businesses that have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic,” San Juan County Council Chairperson Rick Hughes said, the Islands' Weekly reported. “While this will not solve every problem, we welcome and support every opportunity to help island businesses, their owners, and their staff during this difficult time.”
