The state’s Salmon Recovery Board has allotted $18 million in grants to help save salmon from extinction, giving San Juan County $277,742, according to San Juan Islander.
The multi-million dollar grant will go toward improving rivers and getting rid of barriers that block the path for fishes. It will also help fund replating riverbanks.
At the same time, San Juan County’s four similar projects got $277,742 to help save Jacksons Beach and plan for the revival of Crescent Beach, and other local initiatives.
“These grants are the lifeblood of our salmon recovery efforts in Washington State,” Gov. Jay Inslee said, San Juan Islander reported. “They fund the core of our efforts and attract $37.5 million from other sources. These grants, along with the hard work invested by thousands of people working in our state to save salmon, have gone a long way to slowing the decline of salmon."
