Passengers and vehicles began using the new Mukilteo ferry terminal, Washington’s first in 40 years.

However, the $187 million project remains unfinished, with access roads incomplete, elevators not operational and overhead loading of passengers months away, HeraldNet reported in December. That and the pandemic failed to dim the excitement.

David Jones and Michelle Hamshaw watched the construction from their deck in old town and got the first walk-on passenger tickets at the new terminal.

“We are really excited as owners here in old town to see the progress and the beautification of the waterfront,” Hamshaw said, HeraldNet reported.

More than 4 million riders and 2 million vehicles use the terminal annually to travel to and from Whidbey Island.

Crews moved marine infrastructure from the old terminal near the Ivar’s Seafood Restaurant to the new site on a former U.S. Air Force fueling station site.

A short walk connects it to the Sounder rail station and a park-and-ride. Connections to Lighthouse and Edgewater parks will be made with a promenade through the terminal.

Toll booths opened at 5 p.m. before the ferry Suquamish’s arrival at 5:50 p.m., departing a half hour later.
