The incident occurred at about 4:30 a.m., Dec. 17, at the intersection of Libbey Road and Highway 20, which is just inside North Whidbey Fire & Rescue's district boundaries. The driver of a Honda CRV failed to negotiate a turn and the car rolled onto the shoulder of the southbound lane.
The driver was the sole occupant and escaped without serious injury.
Coupeville firefighters on Engine 53 arrived to find the vehicle on its side and engulfed in flames. The fire was spreading to the tree line and firefighters from both agencies worked together to quickly bring the blaze under control.
A total of three engines, one water tender, two brush trucks and two command vehicles responded to the incident. No firefighters were injured.
